Herman grew up in The Hague. After finishing high school he went to Amsterdam to study. That is where he got his engineering degree. After finishing his study he read in the newspaper that Lago Oil in Aruba was looking for engineers in Holland. He applied for a job and after having been received by two men in the Esso Building in the Hague he got the job. And in 1938 he travelled to Aruba by tanker. On board he met with another fellow who was also going to Aruba for Esso. Piet Teekens was his name. Herman started as an operator, but a few years later he moved to the main building and into processing engineering. He married Nelly van Deutekom, whose father was an immigration officer who worked mostly clearing ships in San Nicolas Harbor. Herman and Nell got married the 20th of October 1945. They got 4 children, Corinne, Hanneke, George and Ida. Herman worked at Lago until 1963. Then the whole family went to Holland. Herman died at Xmas 2007, at the age of 94, leaving his wife Nelly and the children and 6 grand children and 3 great-grand children. They are all of them doing well. George is living in Curacao. The girls are all living in Holland.
